Instant Gratification

So... like I said... we love us some one-day re-dos. This arrived in the mail last week and I had to chuckle.

Using some of the same basic pieces from Crate and Barrel, I created my own version of the room. I tried capture the overall feel using affordable and accessible (both very relative terms, I realize) furnishings, but I'm quite certain I didn't do it justice. It's still fun to try though.

All good things take time, right? So let's be patient and furnish our homes with items that we really love and that work in our space. And if we're really patient, we can also reap the benefit of affordability and durability by watching for solid hardwood pieces at consignment shops, in antique stores and on craigslist. Wrapping Up 2011

Looking through my camera, I found a few pictures of projects that either didn't get finished (and therefore didn't get posted) or weren't significant enough to deserve a post of their own.

February- painted the master bedroom

December- waiting for the perfect (affordable) lamps

April- organized some jewelry

August- rewired and refashioned a pair of lamps

November- waiting for the perfect (affordable) shades

October- sawed the skulls off some antlers (ew)

November- used them around the house over the holiday

October- saved up and purchased curtain rods for the living room,

fortunately they arrived intact, no thanks to the UPS guy

December- enjoying the process of searching and saving up for decor,

yay for delayed gratification, next up- art

And last, but certainly not least...

June- started painting the house

December- finally finished, after hiring help on this end

Most of these projects have stories behind them... for example, you may notice that the curtain rods in the first picture of the master bedroom are mounted much higher than in the second picture. The lesson learned is NEVER to hem Ikea curtains by measuring up from the bottom, unless you first measure to insure they are all the same length. And regarding the antlers (picture me on the verge of barfing), the stench of bone is still in my nostrils. No amount of money will convince me to take a hacksaw to bone of any kind ever again.

This collection of pictures comes with a temptation to feel like a procrastinating, unmotivated, goal-defeater. And even more so if I give in to comparing myself to others. Our culture is all about instant gratifiaction. We hear, "Make over your living room today!", "Loose 5 lbs this week!", "Get rid of wrinkles in a month!" and the list goes on. Blogland is full of projects that, while fun and inspiring, frequently create feelings of inadequacy and discontentment. But here's the thing- life is not about completing projects and achieving goals. And it's certainly not about the speed at which projects are completed. What matters is that I live MY life (not yours) and that I am honest with myself and with others about who I am. Most importantly, life is about cultivating a relationship with the One who knows me better than I know myself. Take it from someone who has learned and is still learning- true happiness and contentment is in Christ!

Holiday 2011- DIY Sweater Stockings

I followed Martha's instructions to the letter, but will do a few things differently next time. Most importantly the stockings are too small (says David). So rather than mess with Martha's stocking template, I'll just trace a pattern from some old PB stockings. Secondly, I probably won't make any more with collars. The top gapes open and it doesn't hang nice like the others. Lastly, I suggest making them from the heaviest, tightly woven sweaters you can find. The thinner the fabric or looser the weave, the more they will stretch and possibly tear. Obviously, this isn't an issue if your stocking stuffers are lightweight.

Every year between Thanksgiving and Christmas, I see a million holiday crafts that I want to try. Of course they never get done because more important priorities win out (family, fun, sanity, etc). This year I think it would be fun to do one Christmas craft every month. Then when the holidays roll around again, I'll have some new decor waiting patiently to be used. This sweater stocking craft may be the first one up!

Holiday 2011- DIY Indoor Tipi

3 Poles (each six feet long)

Drill with small bit

Twine (1 yard)

9x12 Drop Cloth

Narrow Ribbon (8-10 yards)

Elastic (10-12 inches)

Scissors

Thread

Tape Measure or yard stick

I pretty much followed Rachel's instructions, making adjustments for three six-foot poles rather than five eight-foot ones. David drilled a small hole 12 inches down from the top of each pole. Then I threaded the twine through and wound it around the three poles, securing it with a couple tight knots.

I decided that the tipi would measure 48 inches from pole to pole at the bottom and of course the three sides would measure 60 inches from top to bottom.

A little basic geometry would have come in handy on the next step, but alas, my memory failed me. Either that or I just didn't pause long enough to pull it from the archives. Since I was making two tipis, I used some left over canvas drop cloth from the tablecloth project. If your drop cloth has a nice finished edge already (mine didn't) and you do happen to remember your geometry, you can save yourself from having to measure, iron and sew the bottom seam. Refer back to Rachel's instructions for more details on measuring and cutting out the panels.

Sew the ribbon ties into the seams of the front two panels. When the tipi is finished, go back and sew three sets of two ties onto each of the side seam allowances. I sewed one set very near the top, one an inch or two up from the bottom and another somewhere in the middle. Mark your poles at each of the sets of ties and then drill a hole. Thread one of the ribbon ties through each hole and knot it tightly around the pole with the other ribbon.

You shouldn't have to take the fabric off the poles in order to take the tipi down. Simply gather it up like an umbrella and use the three sets of ties in the front to secure it. As a side note, this is precisely why I wish I would have made the front ties a bit longer. Instead of eight inches, they should be more like 10 or 12.

Overall, this was a very easy project! And that's saying something coming from me since I have a habit of overcomplicating things. It definitely helped to print out the instructions and make a few diagrams, which I plan to keep for future tipis. Sorry I didn't take more pictures...maybe I can post more later. If you have any questions, definitely let me know!

One more thing... I totally intended to paint some fun designs along the bottom with fabric paint, but simply didn't have enough time. There are tons of pictures of real Native American tipis sporting some designs that look very easy to copy!

O Come, O Come

Emmanuel... God with us. He chose to visit us, to help us. He came to save us from death and darkness, from ourselves. But that's not all... he came to save us into a life with him, a life of light.

And, guess what? There's no required precursor to a relationship with him. You don't have to have your ducks in a row. You don't have to have your act together. You don't have to ace theology before becoming friends with this man.

How do I know? Because he counted it a privilege to leave his throne and be born in the muck and mess of human-ness in a barn. Of all places, a barn. There were no pine boughs over the doorway or sweets on a pretty plate. There was no soft music or scent of hot spice cider there. It's possible that the stalls hadn't even been cleaned out that day. To say that the manger was not worthy is an unimaginable understatement.

So we prepare our homes for the holidays... most of us theme decorate more than any other time of the year. We clean (or not). We bake. We host. We shop. We prepare for arrivals.

Our hearts do not deserve his presence any more than that feeding trough (no matter how clean and sweetsmelling). But still he comes to help us. He says that he loves us right where we are as much as he ever will. And in that love we are accepted and secure. Our Emmanuel. He is with us.

Are you picky about Christmas music? I am. It has to be just the right blend of traditional and fun, not too much crooning or personalization, and not a new overly perky tune to traditional lyrics. All in all, there seems to be a point in which the album is trying a bit too hard to jolly me up for the holidays. True sincerity shines through and, even if it isn't completely my style, makes me consider the real meaning of the season and puts me in a festive mood.

What are your go-to Christmas albums? I'm especially interested in suggestions you might have for old Christmas music, classic stuff that was recorded in the 30s and 40s.

Fall for Modesty

I wrote this post a month ago, but I guess it's still good... even though fall is almost over.

In the last year, I've unsubscribed from all but four or five clothing magazines. It's craziness how you can sign up for one magazine and pretty soon you're getting fifteen in your mailbox every month! So the ones I get now are a mixture of reasonably affordable (I still shop the sales!) and inspirational. When one comes in the mail I look at it immediately (like candy and new shoes, why save 'em?). I tear out any pages that I like and toss the rest of it in the recycle bin. Not only does tossing them right away cut back on clutter, it also cuts back on the problem of wanting what you don't have. Out of sight, out of mind. The pages I tear out go in a binder according to season. I don't spend a lot of time referencing the binder, but it is nice to flip through and get inspiration for the upcoming season. It's much quicker than trying to find ideas online I think, because there's nothing in that binder I don't like.

Two days ago, I received a frantic sounding Etsy message asking if I could overnight two of these...

I know it's stupid, but I got a little giddy thinking that my $15 pillows might show up on such a show. Funny thing though ... everyone I've told so far (husband, couple friends, Mom) has needed an explanation of who he is. LOL. That's real life right there.

But I knew my dear friends in blogland wouldn't need an introduction. And I also knew that you would share in my excitement... even though it is a little shallow, right? I keep telling myself there's a good chance they won't even be used. My guess is that these shows order tons of stuff in and only some of it makes the cut. Supposedly they are shooting the segment today. Who knows when it will air? Are any of you avid watchers of the show? If so, keep an eye out for pink velvet.

update 11/11: received a note saying the show featuring my pillows will air November 22nd! Yay!

Somethings Gotta Give

a little something to play while you're reading...

And it just happens to be blogging. But honestly I'm ok with that. Actually, I'm completely supportive of giving up internet time. Sometimes, I get all radical and want to give it up completely (think- throw the whole computer out the window). Because no matter how fun it may be, it's just not important in the whole scheme of things. And although I do love blogs and have enjoyed making a few new friends in the blog world, most of my blog surfing is simply wasted time.

I decided I need to start viewing it (my blogger dashboard or google reader) more like reading a magazine (leisure time) and less like checking my email (daily, religiously). My posts have dwindled down to less than one per week. I haven't been visiting my favorite blogs much either and sometimes I'm worried that when I do get back into blogging regularly, I'll have to start from scratch again. But, who cares? The truth of the matter is that we have horribly crappy internet connection, which makes regular blogging a bear. But it's also true that blogging can quickly become a huge time waster and a huge source of discontentment for me. Obviously, I have a lot of growing up to do. Someday, I hope to have these three points branded on my blog-loving heart.

Until then, I'm repenting of all feelings of obligation to blogging in general. I'm only gonna blog when I have something of value to share. And we may not always agree on the definition of "valuable content". As you can see, I love to blog about housey (crafty, decorating, housey, yes- materialistic) stuff but also about faith and how it plays out in daily life. To my sisters in the Lord, just knowing you read this blog keeps me challenged and accountable to the nudgings I feel from the Holy Spirit. But please don't judge me solely on the posts that have no spiritual value. To all other bloggy friends, thanks for putting up with the spiritual posts and continuing to comment and share decorating suggestions. Part of the reason I started this blog was to get feedback on housey stuff. So let's still be friends, ok?

The etsy shop has created another source of obligation and I'm not sure how to fit it in with my full time work and bajillion other projects, both of my own and for others. I don't know about you, but it's easy to feel overwhelmed to the point of not knowing where to start. Those of you who have kids and a full time job and still manage to get projects done around the house must be superwomen. I work full time from home, have committed to two unfinished (unstarted) projects for other people, have a busload of fabric waiting to be made into pillows, and have several projects outside that I'd love to get done before winter. I feel pretty overwhelmed. But making that list helped some... :)

My goal this week is to finish washing windows and get two new items listed on etsy. Sounds pretty doable, right? Especially since it looks like I'm literally going to be stuck here all week. The dashboard of my car lit up on Saturday and warning sounds (that I've never heard before) started going off. Needless to say, the day has come that I need a newer car. Thankfully, I just found some $$ in a long lost Roth IRA account! Not enough to buy a dream car, but it will definitely help.

As always, there is very limited yardage for special orders. I snatched up all of the purple quatrefoil that was available and after cutting out two 20" covers, there is enough for a couple more sets of 18", 20" or 22". Two 22" covers of the Timeless Tan Print pretty much used up all that was available. A quick glance at the remainder shows enough for a lumbar or one 18" or 20" cover. Only one (or two) lucky people will get the lovely Folksy Floral pillow covers. Unfortunately there are no remnants. Lastly, the two traditional print lumbar covers are also one of a kind. If you see one you like, don't dilly dally!

Also remember that any of these covers can be altered (to a smaller size, of course) for no additional charge though the policies for custom items would apply. View store policies for details.

I hope to have new winter items up in a month or so! Right now our guest room is a mess... literally you can't see the floor or the bed for all the fabric covering it. I have solid color velvet (blue, green, black, pink), solid chenille (grey, tan), velvet damask print (purple, red), multi color plaids, solid linen (purple, black, blue), and numerous other woven multi color prints, one of which is a multicolor flamestitch.

One last shot... my favorite of the bunch... looks great with my new navy curtains (for which I have yet to purchase rods)... patience, patience, patience.

Surrender

I believe God orchestrates His will for us even in the most minute details of our lives.

We are self sufficient by nature and prone to writing things off as coincidence, and maybe some things are, but I believe God can work through our flesh without disturbing our self will, to work His master plan. The question is… do I want to be a part of it?

I have no doubt that His ultimate plan will prevail- with or without me. The question is… am I willing to turn my eyes from this earth, from this life and wholeheartedly focus on the big picture, on the eternal? And when I say yes and give my heart and life to my Saviour, the next question is… will I continue to give in to the urgings of His Holy Spirit on a daily basis?

Without whole and complete surrender, how can I hope to become the woman God wants me to be, the woman I want to be? Again, it’s important to remember that God’s ultimate plan will be carried out with or without me. Fortunately, He wants me to be on board! He’s rooting for me! In fact, He took the most extreme measures to ensure victory! All I have to do is let Him do His thing, give him the drivers seat.

At most, it’s a choice between eternal life starting now (yes, it's true!) and eternal death. At the least, it’s a decision of how victoriously, how joyfully, how thankfully I wish to live this life He has gifted me. How and whether I daily yield my life to the nudging of the Holy Spirit, is a measure of just how much I wish to glorify my Saviour. And I can’t help but think that Jesus made it pretty clear which side claims the fence-straddlers.

Obviously there is a moment of initial surrender. For me, that moment occurred 11 years ago. I determined that I wanted to be part of God’s salvation plan. And by His power, I turned my eyes to Jesus and renounced sin and self. But in order to grow, there must also be a daily, weekly, situational surrender that is just as sincere and maybe even more complete than the day I confessed. Which leaves me asking: Who am I now? Have I allowed God to grow me? Have I fallen back into my preChrist living?

(Which, in reality, wasn’t so terrible when measured against those “really horrible” sins. The problem is that ALL sin is equally horrible when compared to God’s holiness. A judgemental spirit, a self-serving attitude and an unthankful heart appear just as horrific to God as serial murder, recurring adultery and blatant lies appear to us.)

So I may very well look like I have been saved from sin and self. I may look like I’m walking with Jesus and living for Him, but what standard of measurement am I using? There is only One standard that matters. All others are tools of deception, used by Satan to keep me in a life of half-heartedness and complacency. Additionally, it’s important to remember that only God sees and knows the extent to which I yield to the impulse of His Holy Spirit. And His view is the only one that matters.

The details of the “what now” answer most likely look different for each of us, but the general theme and outcome has to be the same, doesn't it? A deeper walk with our Saviour. But what does that mean? For myself, I can say without a doubt it means that I must realize and respond to even the smallest of urgings my heart feels. How do you know if they are from the Spirit, you ask? Answer: You don’t. That’s why you (I) should act on them all (be reasonable, people). Because how else will I learn to recognize the Holy Spirit in my life?

I cannot deny the truth God is showing me about the connection between a deeper walk with Him and a very real surrender of all that I am and all that I have. He is showing me that the condition of my heart is the only difference between surrender and obedience out of obligation (resulting in bondage and guilt) and surrender and obedience out of thanksgiving and a desire to glorify Him more fully. He alone holds the keys to my heart. And He is the only one who can properly build up a solid foundation (Christ’s love for me- yes, me!) from which righteousness, holiness and glory to Him can grow.

All I have to do is surrender.

What has God been pressing on your heart lately? Do you push it away? Do you try to ignore it, like I often do? If so, I fear the road is getting wide, ladies. And I don't know about you, but I want to be on the narrow one... with Jesus.

For it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure. Phil 2:13

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. Eph 2:8-10

Saving is all his idea and all his work. All we do is trust him enough to let him do it. It’s God’s gift from start to finish! We don’t play the major role. If we did, we’d probably go around bragging that we’d done the whole thing! No, we neither make nor save ourselves. God does both the making and the saving. He creates each of us by Christ Jesus to join him in the work he does, the good work he has gotten ready for us to do, work we had better be doing. Eugene Peterson, The Message

Thoughts on Injustice

On Friday night, we had a girls night out... pizza and a movie! Seriously, this movie is without a doubt worthy of all the hype it's getting. And not that I'm any kind of film expert, but I thought the acting was convincing and the direction and filming were great. Again, I'm no expert, but I do admit to watching movies with the directors commentary turned on... multiple times in some cases... sometimes followed by watching the movie again without it (i.e. The Family Stone- love that one). Call me nerdy, I don't care. I've learned things I never would have otherwise and it's made me notice and appreciate good movies much more.

Anyway... back to The Help. There are so many different undercurrents, but the one that stands out most to me is injustice.  Throughout the story we see injustice between races, social classes, peers, employer and employee, mother and daughter and probably a few more that I can't remember. It is shown through race specific restrooms for the maids, gossiping about and then shunning the new girl in town, extreme social manipulation, false accusations leading to arrest and imprisonment and diaper rash due to a lack of Shirley Temple cuteness.

As expected, the reactions to these injustices are all over the board. A few swallow their pride and follow the rules, one is too tenderhearted to realize the injustice being done to her, several find self motivation and determination to stay the course, one is driven to revenge through chocolate pie and many find their voice through the injustice.  Last, but not least, one cries at the window as her source of true love and acceptance is forced from her life.

My blood pressure rises at the thought of these examples having real-life merit. I say that because although most of these examples are historical fact in the South, I am at least three generations removed from any East coast ancestry, none of which lived south of North Carolina.  I find it absolutely unfathomable that anyone could have such juvenile thinking... let alone a whole country. But now we're off track. The point is... how do I react to injustices I see done to others?  How should I react? To what extent should they spur action?

And even more revealing is how I react to injustices done to me. How should I react?  To what extent should I defend myself? Should they spur any action all? Does my reaction reflect an active relationship with Jesus? Have I sought His wisdom and direction? Have I spent time in His biography enough to know how He might have reacted? Do I even have a desire to react as He would have? I pray I do, but I know myself well enough to know that even the desire to be like Him is evidence of His grace.

There is much that could be said and much scripture that could be quoted and used to defend one point or another, but I have no desire to manipulate scripture to prove a point. Not that I even know which point I'd attempt to prove. This theme of injustice has been on my heart for the last few days and I know from experience that's usually the Spirit. Every situation of injustice is different. Seek Jesus in them all. Be open to His leading.

Sometime in that moment between awake and asleep on Sunday morning, this scripture (the bold part) popped into my head. It won't leave.

Be subject for the Lord's sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good. For this is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people. Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God. Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor.

Servants, be subject to your masters with all respect, not only to the good and gentle but also to the unjust. For this is a gracious thing, when, mindful of God, one endures sorrows while suffering unjustly. For what credit is it if, when you sin and are beaten for it, you endure? But if when you do good and suffer for it you endure, this is a gracious thing in the sight of God. For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.

1 Peter 2: 13 - 24

In the midst of injustices, if we pause to spend time with our Saviour, we hear him whispering "You are kind. You are smart. You are important." We find peace and rest knowing who we are in Him and knowing that nothing on earth can change how He feels about us.

Materials:
Lamp
New cord (here's a basic clear replacement cord)
Screwdriver
Wrench
Glue (gun or tube, whatever you have on hand)

1. Lol...unplug lamp. Remove felt/cardboard bottom.

2. You should see the cord going up into the lamp base through a metal tube that's secured with a nut (and washer). Don't loosen this yet.

3. Unscrew the socket above the harp bottom. You don't have to be gentle. You'll feel the cord twisting inside, but it will eventually come loose. You see that the socket on my lamp is black plastic- most sockets are brass like the second picture. They unscrew all the same.

4. Loosen the bolt on the bottom (shown in the step 2 picture). Your lamp will literally almost fall apart. Don't worry. The thing that holds it all together is that long metal tube. Once you get it rewired and tighten the nuts, it will be better than new!

5. Unscrew the socket cap. If you have a brass socket (as shown in step 3 pictures), simply jiggle, twist or pry it off with a screwdriver. Sometimes they are a bit stubborn but just keep trying. Then pull on the socket to reveal the cord knot.

6. At this point, I had to cut the wires going up into the socket, but that's because mine is abnormal. Most likely, your wires will be secured to the socket with small screws. Simply loosen the screws and detatch the wires from the socket.

7. Loosen the knot at the top of the cord and pull it out through the bottom of the lamp base. Pay attention to the placement of all the washers and nuts so that you can thread the new cord exactly the same way.

8. Next, thread the new cord through the lamp base taking care to replace all washers and nuts. Thread it out through the top and then tighten the nut on the bottom of the lamp base. You might not want to tighten it all the way until you have adjusted your lamp parts so they all line up right. This will make sense once you get to this point.

9. Replace the socket base. Again, mine is black plastic, but yours is likely brass. Screw it all the way down, tight.

10. Pull apart the two wires like this. Then create a knot as shown. A picture of this knot will also be on the instructions that come with your cord.

11. Look closely at the two wires. One will have ridges along the outside and the other won't. Secure the ridged wire around the silver screw then tighten.

12. Secure the smooth wire around the gold screw and tighten.

13. If you have a brass socket, slip the socket cover (brass + cardboard) all the way down over the socket. Feed any excess cord back through the bottom and snap the socket into the base. You will hear it click into place. In my case, I screwed the socket cover back on.

14. Replace the felt/cardboard bottom and secure with some glue. Just make sure it's dry before you set it down on a surface... unless you want your lamp permanently affixed to your tabletop. That Crazy Glue is something else.

15. Replace your shade and you're done! I don't really have a good before picture for these lamps, but originally they were black with black cords. I painted them white a few years ago and the existing black cords always bugged me. Here's a post showing how they have evolved.

Could there be any more finishes here? Seriously, I think they should outlaw all polished brass. Anyone else have lamps that look like this? :)

Hopefully this tutorial will be of some value to you. If you ever purchase a lamp at a junk or consignment shop, I would highly recommend replacing the cord and maybe even the socket before using it. Who wants a $5 lamp to cause their house to go up in flames? Not me.

Can you believe that September is just around the corner? Early this year before the end of winter, I decided to stop counting the days until the next season. Time goes by fast enough without fast-forwarding it in my mind. So although I absolutely LOVE fall and I look foward to crisp weather and crunchy, colorful leaves, I've been forcing myself not to think past this last bit of summer! It's almost over folks... so wear sandals every day, take a trip to the lake, lay out in the sun, and relish the taste of those freshly picked tomatoes! Don't think about boots and sweaters quite yet, ok?!

Anyway, without further adieu, here is our most used, back door entry...

This room hasn't changed at all since last April when we put up the row of pegs, added crown moulding and organized and painted the closet. You can see more pictures here. Eventually, I'd like to repaint the walls, paint the inside of the door to match the deep sea blue of the outside, change out the builder basic flush mount light and add a fabric roman shade. You probably think the red paint job looks fine, but something is seriously wrong with the finish. I don't do well with paint finishes that don't allow for damp rag cleaning.

I dream of doing that faux paneling look below the pegs with a built in bench seat, but David (bless his heart) just can't stand the thought of it not being trimmed correctly. I appreciate his wanting to do it right, but I also know this means it will never happen. Oh well. There are probably more important things on which to spend time and $. He keeps me grounded.

Now it's time to hear your ideas for our front door entry...

Do you kinda see my problem? I like the placement of the bookcases, but can't figure out what to do on the wall with the two paintings. The obvious answer would be a table or short dresser, but next to two bookcases, that seems like too much furniture just lining the walls. The only other thought I have is to add a chair beneath the paintings and a floor lamp behind it as a little reading nook.

I dearly love the traditional entry...a dresser flanked by two chairs with a mirror or fabulous piece of art above, but (correct me if I'm wrong) that just won't be happening in this house unless I get rid of the bookcases.

Your thoughts? Seriously, let's hear 'em.

We Love Pizza!

Every week we make homeade pizza. We don't venture outside the box much with toppings, but we've both found combinations we like and we don't seem to tire of them.

Caesar salad dressing as sauce and thinly sliced tomatoes roasted for a bit before adding chicken, fresh basil leaves, fresh mozzarella and a little grated romano.

David's pizza

Basic meat lovers... with extra, extra cheese.

In case you don't have a pizza crust recipe you like, here is the one we use...

Pizza Hut Pizza Dough

Ingredients:
2 pkgs yeast
2 tsp sugar
2/3 c warm water
2 c cold water
2 Tbls sugar
1/4 tsp garlic powder
3 Tbls oil
1 scant Tbls salt
6 1/2 c flour
1/2 tsp oregano

Directions:
Mix warm water, yeast and 2 tsp sugar. Let stand 5 minutes until bubbly. In another bowl, mix cold water, 2 Tbls sugar, garlic, oil, salt, oregano and 3 c flour; beat until smooth. Add yeast mixture and remaining flour. Mix until combined then knead until elastic. Divide into thirds. Press each third onto greased pan. Let rise 5-10 minutes then add sauce and bake at 400 for 10-15 minutes. Remove and add toppings, then bake until heated through and cheese is bubbly.

Notes:
I usually cut the recipe in half and divide a bit unevenly, giving David the larger part. And it's usually more than enough for one meal. I keep thinking I'm going to make a full recipe and put half of the unbaked dough in the freezer.

Also, I recently ran across this fruit tart pizza recipe in the July 2011 edition of Real Simple. I had a pie crust on hand so I gave it a try. It was very easy and very yummy!

From Real Simple

Nectarine Galette

Ingredients:
1 refrigerated rolled piecrust
3 thinly sliced nectarines or peaches
3 tablespoons turbinado sugar
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut up

Directions:
1.Heat oven to 375° F with the rack in the lowest position.
2.Place the piecrust on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Leaving a 2-inch border, top with the nectarines or peaches. Sprinkle with 2 tablespoons of the sugar and the butter. Fold the edges of the dough toward the center, overlapping slightly and partially covering the fruit. Brush the dough with 2 teaspoons water and sprinkle with the remaining tablespoon of sugar.
3.Bake until the juices are bubbling and the crust is golden (tent with foil if the crust browns too quickly), 35 to 40 minutes.

Scrap Fabric Flags

I made a triangle template from newspaper and cut the flags from scrap fabric. I cut two triangular pieces for every flag and serged right sides together. The burlap is just one thickness and is zigzagged rather than serged. They are strung with (white) binding tape that was dip dyed in tea syrup to take away the stark whiteness. Cream probably would have looked better, but white was what I had so... you know they say that the art of craftiness is using what you have on hand. Or something. Anyway, there are a million tutorials all over blogland if you need one. Just google...which brings me to the question of-

Is this a pennant flag, a pendant flag or a pendent flag? I've seen them referred to in all three ways, but the grammar fanatic in me won't let it rest.

How cute is this potting bench? I bet Ana White has plans for a potting bench that you could make yourself! Just mount an old window behind the shelves!

Then make a trip to your local Goodwill or consignment shop and buy some wooden spoons. Dip them in paint (I would use chalkboard paint!) and have fun marking your veggies and herbs!

How To: Use Flopped Strawberry Jam

~~Necessity~~ Extreme practicality is the mother of ~~invention~~ googling.

What can I say? I grew up in the Midwest... where we use it up, wear it out, and then save the parts.

So, have you ever made multiple batches of freezer jam only to realize four hours later that you didn't read the instructions correctly? Did you get mad and throw it away like I almost did? If not, how did you use it?

ps. To diy, simply double the amount of crushed strawberries that the SureJel recipe requires. lol. :)

Even though the shop is in desperate need of more inventory, I am determined to stick to my recent commitment on projects in general, which requires me to finish what I've started before going on to something else. (ha!) Right now that means finish painting the exterior of the house... the most dreadful of all jobs... esp in 100+ heat... with an untrustworthy extension ladder. But we will sure have something to celebrate when it's done!

Snooping Around- A House Tour

When we were in Ohio earlier this month, we had the privilege of staying with some friends of David's parents. We so enjoyed spending time with them and with David's brother and sister-in-law from Auburn who stayed there as well. Later in the week, David's sister and her family came with new baby Grey and we had a regular little reunion! We couldn't have asked for a better hostess... wonderful hospitality, good food and plenty of laughter. It was great!

Anyway, the whole time we were there, I couldn't help but notice the decor. I don't know how to describe it other than to say that everything (furniture and accessories, the whole bit) is put together so well, so thoughtfully. As you look at these pictures, please look beyond my lack of photography skills and notice the furniture (cupboards, sideboards, armoires) the accessories (stacked boxes, baskets) and the wall decor (gallery style artwork, wreaths, misc groupings).

A couple general observations... Simple, unfussy upholstery, bedding and window treatments throughout the whole house allow the antiques to take center stage. And a uniform neutral wall color in the living, dining and kitchen areas (with the exception of the chair rail in the dining room) keep the living space looking calming and cohesive.

When I asked Connie where she learned to decorate so well, she shrugged her shoulders and gave some general modest answer about collecting things over the years. She said the first antique piece they purchased was a hutch for $400, which they still have and use. They have continued to collect antique furniture and she especially likes wall cabinets and wooden boxes. So even though she didn't directly answer my question, I think I know the answer... she has an eye for decor because the Good Lord gave it to her. And because of Him, her home is more than just a well decorated house, it's a warm, welcoming, comfortable and gracious home.

Jesus Christ... an essential, desirable and undeniable-if-truly-present element... at work in our homes and in our lives!

Heading Outside

Recently, we hired Melissa from Fiddlehead Landscape to give us a plan for the front of our house, which currently looks like this...

And because I'm a very visual person, I made a Pinterest board of all the plants. You can see it here if you are interested. I thought there was a way to sort of insert the board into a blog post, but I can't find anything on it so maybe I was mistaken.

At this point, we know that we want to swap the pink crepe myrtle with a white one and possibly the dark red weeping japanese maple for a multicolored green one. I get a little nervouse about so many different colors all in one place. And since we're planning on doing this in stages (for the sake of $$, as always:) we may end up ommitting a few plants all together. It's nice to finally have a plan... now we just have to execute it. I think the plan is to put in the mulch beds this summer and start planting this fall!

Have you ever put in landscaping from scratch like this? Do you have any advice?

Goodwill Alteration

I scored three shirts at Goodwill a couple weeks ago! This one had to be brand new and is really comfortable (obviously, since you've seen it like three times already) with the exception of the sleeves. They were a weird three quarter length with little elastic cuffs. You can see them here...

So I chopped them off,

turned them up twice and sewed.

Much better.

If you don't have a sewing machine or do but don't know how to operate it (hey, I'm not judging), you could always do a simple slip stitch hem on the sleeves. Turn them up twice like I did and then sew em down with a needle and thread. Very easy!

And just to make this post a little more interesting, here are a couple festive summer outfits. I know, I know. I see that hem.

Interesting that this room has generally the same color scheme as the living room- orange and grey. I like that the side tables and art on each side of the bed are not exactly the same. Proof that similar shape items can give the illusion of symmetry just as well as identical items.

A little wild for my taste, but fun nonetheless. I like the window seat area with the built in shelving and sconces. Could definitely inspire a DIY project. We have the perfect spot to copy the idea, but I probably should NOT use this photo as an example to show David. He'd flip. Both antlers and purple in one week? Not a good idea.

Thrill of the Hunt

Look what I caught last weekend!

Trendy, yes. But kinda fun, you know? I spotted them on Friday afternoon at a little consignment shop and waffled around about buying them. Stuff goes so fast at consignment shops so I knew I had to get them on Saturday if I really wanted them. I broke the news to David on Friday night with something like "Ok, so just hear me out. I found something today that I want to buy and it's a little crazy and kind of out there (for me), but I'll use my own blow money (yes, we budget spending money) and I'd really like it if you'd just let me do this." After telling him that it was a pair of silver antlers and assuring him that I wasn't joking, I watched him melt into a puddle of laughter right there on the kitchen floor. To his credit, he said yes without much pressure.

Two minutes after I got home with them on Saturday, he whipped out his camera phone and had them perched up in the living room saying something about taking a picture for Greg (a friend who hunts). By this time it was one huge joke and I was having fun playing along, so I mentioned something about posing beside my big catch. A little sarcastically, I might add. Almost instantly he was out of the room and I heard him digging around in the closet for his gun (which I've only seen twice in the last four years). He demonstrated how I should kneel beside the antlers and then pretty much used every trick in the book to convince me to copy the stance and stay there long enough so he could get a picture. I'll have to admit I did think it was pretty funny, but I made him promise that he could ONLY show it to Greg and that the picture could not leave his phone at all. Facebook was mentioned as a definite no-no, but evidently we had a misunderstanding. And evidently I don't have too strong of a backbone because this showed up on FB later...

I'm sure he would delete it if I made a big enough stink, but the truth is that I kinda think it's funny. And I guess it's good to be able to laugh at yourself sometimes.

ps. See that suzani lumbar pillow? It's for sale!

pps. No animals were harmed in the aquisition of the antlers. Call me a Yankee or a Democrat or a ~~Tree~~ Animal Hugger, but I don't particularly like guns. I definitely don't like war. And I'm pretty sure I wouldn't actually be able to pull the trigger on an animal. Although I do have a kill on sight rule for spiders, stink bugs and mosquitoes. So I guess you can also call me a hypocrite. And by the way, no offense to the three aforementioned categories. I get called any or all three of them on a fairly regular basis (mostly as a joke). Welcome to the South.

One Dress, Three Ways

So I got the crazy idea to make a pattern from a dress I got a Target several years ago and sew a new dress for this summer. No matter how good of an idea it seemed to be, I won't ever try it again. The end result is better than expected, but the armholes are much too big, the waist is too low, and the shape of the skirt is way off. It's comfortable though and with a sweater or jacket and a belt, who has to know?!

Two questions- 1. What's the significance of the 8 and the 0?

2. How annoying would it be to have to move them when you wanted to access the shelves behind?

Conclusion: terribly cute but not so practical. I think you could get the same look by using smaller canvases, painting monograms instead of numbers, and hanging them on the frame of the shelving.

When my grandmother passed away, I snagged a box of her travel books. In it was an old Rand McNally map book of Europe with roads highlighted from her travels in the 80's. It's very special, like a little piece of her. Anyway, someday I hope to frame them up like this.

Burning Question: Is it ok to copy someone's art for use in your own home? The ethical implications of copying art for resale are pretty obvious, but what if you simply plan to put it in your home? Does it make a difference if the art you are copying is available for purchase? Where does one draw the line? Or has the line already been drawn and I'm just unaware? If you were an artist (established or budding) and saw a copy of your work, how would you feel?

Shop Landsend & Modesty Matters

So I know Landsend is mostly associated with canvas bags, raincoats and elastic waist knit pants, but if you can look beyond all that, you'll find some really cute clothes. Obviously they stay within the realm of traditional and classic, but fresh colors and updated styles give a more modern look.

I'm sure some of the pieces below look boring to some of y'all. I must definitely be traditional when it comes to clothing because I think I'd be happy if my closet held only these items... and a string of pearls. But if you're more eclectic and artsy, I think Landsend is still a great resource for your basic pieces. Just spice 'em up with accessories, shoes or a trendy top.

Landsend Canvas is also a great (probably better) place to find updated traditional. It's definitely got a younger feel... you'll see that instantly from the website. But items are also a little more expensive and the cute dresses and skirts expose a bit more (thunder) thigh than this girl feels comfortable showing.

And because it's always a consideration, I can't leave without saying that I think Landsend is an good resource for those to whom modesty matters. I know we don't all define modesty in the same way. Personally, I view it as quiet (inner) beauty and tasteful, complimentary clothing. But there are some overarching themes that define modesty in any setting and they include moderation, reservation and limitation of some kind. Never are we called to look dowdy or embarrasing, but to be the best we can be in a way that doesn't draw excessive attention... because we all know that feigned modesty cannot hide an arrogant, showy attitude and true modesty is simply undeniable.

Beyond Belief

On Facebook the other day, a friend posted part of Louis Theroux's second documentary on Westboro Baptist Church. I ended up watching all four parts. There are absolutely no words to describe how horribly twisted this is. Here is a litle four minute snippit that sums up the overall tone.

At the risk of following their lead by picking out and using random verses as defence...

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. John 3:16-17

They testify here that their job is NOT "to win souls to Christ" but rather to "make what is already in the hearts [of people] come out of their mouth". But I don't see their protests convincing anyone of their sin, much less spurring repentance. It just makes people mad. And it turns people away. Fear is never a good motivator. And it's certainly never a motivator of true change. Acting out of fear is self-centered and self-preserving (whether I'm running from a bear or running up the aisle at the altar call to avoid hell).

Anyway, I didn't really intend to say so much. I'd love to hear your thoughts and comments. And what scriptures pop into your head.

Dear God, You have the power to speak truth into the hearts of these angry people. You have the power to soften their hearts, to humble them before you. Give them the courage to listen to your voice above all others. Show them how to focus on you and share the hope they have in you. Help me in each of these areas as well, Father and let me be a vessel of your grace in the face of such hatred. Amen

I've been touring homes at Poppies at Play this week and thought it'd be fun to participate in the home tour linky today. It's so much fun to peek inside homes... of many different styles of decorating... all around the country. So I guess I'm participating because I have so much fun viewing. Shucks, someone's got to contribute! For those of you who we've had the pleasure of having over, you won't be seeing anything new this time around...unfortunately. Other than the overall level of cleanliness...which is abnormally high right now.

Few quick facts... our home was built two years ago... a custom modular by Southern Heritage Homes of SW Virginia. We have fun working on the house and have a huge list of things we want to do but as you can see (by the glaring lack of landscaping:), we don't let it consume us. Some months we are motivated, others we are not. We live life and we I try not to think too much about the undone. Note to self: life is more than striving to attain perfection. As the Nester says... IDHTBPTBB (it doesn't have to be perfect to be beautiful).

We still need to finish the porch... and landscape, of course.

I sewed all the pillow covers. I love to sew. Most of the time.

Back towards the front door. Although there's not much for furniture here now, it works for us. Dreams include a console under the large framed piece, a skirted round table in the corner with a unique lamp of some kind, shades and/or curtains, and swapping one of the couches out for these two chairs, recovered of course.

Kitchen... Nothing fancy, but we like it and the layout seems to work really well.

I love that the sink faces the living room. And someday we'll get bar stools.

The light is obviously centered with the room rather than the windows. Funny, I've never noticed that before.

As you can probably see, I'm not one for tchotchkes. I have a really hard time seeing the point of something if it has absolutely no functional or sentimental value (very thankful to my mom for this trait). And I'm not extremely sentimental. There's so much value and benefit to living clutter-free... a truely counter cultural lifestyle here in the US. And I've found that visual organization and orderliness help with the mental and emotional. Call me crazy, but I'm being serious. Ok, I'll get off my soapbox now.

Again... perfection. Except I can't figure the practical function of that door.

Abundant texture makes up for the minimal color.

You know they talk about an item "making the room"? I think those pillows on the bed are a good example.

I wonder how long it took the lowly assistants to stack that pile of wood. It's genius though, isn't it? And are those dark purple pillows velvet? If so, that's genius too... velvet in a room full of rough hewn wood.

Again, love the light. And the paneling. The ship? Not so much. But it's probably a model of the owners real life ship or something. So to follow suit, we should have a go-cart model in our family room.

I think it would be a brave task to stain wall paneling so dark. But I like it. And I see they offset it with very light flooring and upholstery. In my sarcasm, I can't help but mention that the Hermes throw blanket is probably worth more than all the furniture in our house combined. :)

Is that a built in griddle? If so, this stove is definitely on someday list. The stove we had growing up was extra wide with a large built in griddle. It was awesomely convenient. The extra space also allowed for a warming oven on one side. Totally cool.

Change, Prayers and Golf Balls

Life is so full of the unknown, unexpected and unplanned. The world is a mess and sometimes our thoughts and emotions aren’t far behind. We can’t predict the location of the next earthquake or what might happen tomorrow in the Middle East. Even our best guess at where and who we’ll be tomorrow or a year from now is simply that, a guess.

So, we rest. We recline and relax in the knowledge that God is our Father. Jesus is our Master and has given us all that pertains to life and godliness (2 Pet 1:3), has promised that we will suffer for Him (2 Tim 3:12), yet He will not allow us to be tempted above what we are able to bear (1 Cor 10:13). He will meet our needs as we seek Him first (Mat 7:33), will finish the work He started in us (Phil 1:6), is returning to take us to the place He’s prepared (Jn 14:3), has blessed us with the same power that raised Him from the dead (Rom 8:11), has charged His angels to protect us (Ps 91:11). As we abide in Him, He abides in us will produce fruit (Jn 15:4)!

The noise of the world and the worries in our hearts are made silent as we spend time with the Lord and allow His word to transform us. We find blessing in responding to His love in obedience and service to Him. And we realize that no matter what the future holds, sadness or sickness, poverty or persecution, mistakes and missteps, none of it matters. For we know (and can testify!) that all things work together for good to those who love God (Rom 8:28). All we need to do is give Him each moment, each minute, each day of our lives.

Tomorrow, my sister, my one and only close relative here in Virgina, is moving back to Kansas where the rest of my family lives. I know I'll be fine, but I can feel myself repressing feelings of jealousy and self pity. Both sit in my stomach like rocks and in my throat like... golf balls... or something. We're going over to help them finish packing the truck tonight and I'm afraid of melting into a huge mess of tears. But obviously I need to quit making this so much about me.

At my request, their family and friends have been secretly sending me little blessing/prayer cards for their move. I just finished writing mine and compiling the rest of the cards into a journal. I'm excited that it turned out well and pray that they will receive blessing and encouragement from it. The plan is to surprise them with it tonight and give strict instructions not to read it until they are on the road.

Been sitting here for five minutes trying to think of what to title this post. Nothing seems worthy. Nothing seems accurate.

A little glimpse into my week...not much got done around the house, but sometimes it's nice to just let things lay.

work, work, work. love being busy. seriously, I do.

new addition to the kitchen sink... thanks to David!

decreasing my intake of milk products.... with very positive results, I might add. but I vow never to try soy milk again. almond milk is actually good. soy milk is worse than blegh. and... the wine? doesn't contribute much to the weight loss, but it was good with some ravioli.

curtain rods up.

curtains still in a pile. pillow covers to make. I decided to stick to the original plan and use the ikat for a lumbar cover. thinking of using the navy and white cats cradle for king pillow shams. not sure whether it goes with or is too similar to the greek key curtain trim though.

yes. I cross-stitch. started it about 8 years ago for my mom. determined to finish.

finishing up two months of morning exercises. time to step up the intensity though. it's getting a little boring and ineffective.

So I love looking at pretty pictures as much as the next girl, but it's nice to be reminded that we live in the real world of clutter, messes and unfinished projects. Picture perfect is great, but real life is better. I think there's something to be admired in every home regardless of whether the decor fits my taste. Call me snoopy, but I'd love to see your home on a regular day.

Chicken Tortilla Soup

4 cups (32 oz) chicken broth

1 1/2 t ground cumin

1 t chili powder

1/2 t onion powder

1 can (28 oz) fire roasted diced tomatoes
4 cups chopped cooked chicken

1 pkg (10 oz) frozen sweet whole kernel corn

1 can black beans, rinsed

salt and pepper to taste

In a large pot, combine chicken broth, cumin, chili powder and onion powder. Add diced tomatoes (or stewed tomatoes would work), chicken, corn, and black beans. Bring to boil then reduce heat and simmer. Add salt and pepper to taste. Garnish with cheese, fresh cilantro, lime or avacado wedges and tortilla chips. Make approx 8 servings.

Make your own tortilla strips by cutting tortillas into thin strips. Bake at 350 for 4-6 minutes or until crisp.

Notes:

David doesn't like onion so I never keep it on hand. Swap out the onion powder for 1 large onion, chopped and sauted in 1 T oil. Then add chicken broth, etc.

The real recipe calls for 1 T cumin. I think cumin can get strong really fast so I went easy on it.

I'm not a huge tomato fan, but I LOVED the taste of fire roasted tomatoes!

You could easily get by with less than 4 cups of chicken.

The real recipe doesn't call for any black beans, but I'm glad I stuck them in. Next time I will try two cans.

Chicken boullion cubes have plenty of salt, so I didn't add any.

And, ahem... David had an egg sandwich last night while I enjoyed my soup. Three years ago that probably would have upset me but not anymore. Especially after taking his supper requests for the few nights prior. It's all about compromise, right? :)

On another note:

I also made bread yesterday... successfully! PTL!

Although we've been married three years, I still get a little nervous when a recipe calls for yeast and kneading and rising. Yes, I know... sad. So I decided it was time to cultivate my culinary skillz. 10 days ago, my first batch of sourdough was ready to go and I enthusiastically mixed up a batch, set it prettily in a bowl on the hot oven to rise and.... nothing. It sat there for hours like a lump on a ~~log~~ oven. So I reasoned that I must have messed something up and decided to try again.... still... nothing. No kidding. By this time I was running out of starter as I wanted to keep some for myself and needed to save some for my dear friend who gave all hers away. After another 10 days, I did what I do best and made the recipe my own... and it worked!

Now I'm off to make more! So much for the weight loss program.

Shower Curtain Idea

Ok, so I'll admit that I cannot claim originality for most of the projects I do around here. I look at too many blogs for that to happen. But this one... even though it's pretty small and unaffecting, I dreamed up entirely in my own head. I'm sure someone has thought of it, but I've never seen it posted anywhere. Yay for authenticity! You know how they always say that more fabric is better than less for curtains... fullness vs skimpiness?

Do you ever get annoyed (esp at hotels) when the shower curtain is barely wide enough to stretch the length of the rod? You keep pull it a bit to one end and then you notice that there's a gap at the other end so you pull it back and forth and back.... Two shower curtains must be the answer. And I think it even looks better when closed...

Of course, if these shower curtains were $80 a piece, I can assure you that I would not have two of them. As it is, I'm probably going to have to wait until next month to get another liner (thanks to Dave Ramsey). But when they're $15 or $20 per curtain or if you're making them yourself from inexpensive fabric or a bedsheet or something, it would be totally worth it.

Back Story...

I made these curtains for the rental house we lived in right after we were married. The one tiny bathroom had both a tub shower and a doorless closet both on one wall. A second and matching shower curtain was a good way to cover the closet opening for minimal $, I thought. The red paisley part of the curtains were Martha Stewart from Kmart. I sewed the white linen border on the bottom so they would reach the floor. And if I was doing the project again, I would double or triple the width of the border so the curtain could be hung right at the ceiling and still touch the floor. I think you can get extra long liners at Bed Bath and Beyond. Someday, I'll make new, extra tall shower curtains for our current guest bath, but in the meantime it's nice not to spend any money. Rug Project

A love of rugs and a teeny, tiny budget are a fairly incompatible pair. Usually they don't get along too well, as in... lots of arguments, name calling that quickly fades into the silent treatment, and (gasp!) occasional infidelity. But never fear, things are on the mend. They were able to find common ground at Big Lots a couple weeks ago and recently underwent an intense therapy session in my little sewing room. Now they are living happily ever after in our guest room.

Ok, so maybe "ever after" is a stretch but...

Materials:
Rugs (any size throw rugs, runners, etc/ mine were $9 a piece from Big Lots)
Sewing Machine
Heavy Duty Needles
Invisible Thread
Straight Pins with colored heads

1. Lay the rugs out on a large open floor to determine how they should be sewn together. It's like a puzzle. Several of mine didn't have straight edges or differed an inch or two in length or width. Play around with the arrangement until you have it as perfect as possible.

2. Use straight pens with colored heads to color code how the rugs will be sewn together. Or come up with a better easier plan to mark them. You could draw a numbered diagram and then pin little pieces of paper to each one according to the diagram. You get the point.

3. Change out the needle on your machine to a heavy duty one. And get it all threaded up with the invisible thread. I found invisible thread to be a bear to work with. It took more than a couple tries to get it going on my bobbin threader. Once I started sewing, I noticed that it would occasionally get caught around the spool holder, pull very tight and then snap. So I just had to watch it and fix it the whole time. Not too much fun, but could be worse. I would also suggest letting up the pressure of the presser foot a little.

4. Check the lengths of the two rugs you are sewing together. If the lengths are a little off, simply ease in the fullness as you sew. This obviously only works if the difference is minimal.

5. Sew using the zig zag or flatlock stitch, adjusting your sewing machine to the widest possible stitch.

6. Don't worry about perfection. As the Nester would say "IDHTBPTBB". Translation... it doesn't have to be perfect to be beautiful! Plus no one in their right mind is going to get on their knees and inspect your rug. And you're using invisible thread. Is that enough to convince all you type A's out there?

Here's another shot of the final project. There are several more things I want to do in here, but it's coming along.
